2008 Critical Scholarships for Intensive Language Institutes
The United States Department of State and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) announce the availability of scholarships for intensive overseas study in the critical need foreign languages of Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu for Summer 2008.
As part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages, the Department of State Critical Language Scholarships will provide funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students to participate in beginning, intermediate and/or advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners. Recipients of these scholarships will be expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their professional careers.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Study
Blakemore Freeman Fellowships fund a year of advanced study of an Asian language in Asia for American citizens and permanent residents of the United States who have a college degree and who plan to use an Asian language in their careers. Please refer to our language grant main page for grant guidelines and eligibility requirements. We also recommend our FAQ page, which has answers to many common questions. Application forms are printed from this website. For 2008 grants, study must start between June 2008 and May 2009.

Every year in July, the French Government, through its Embassy in the U.S., offers grants to qualified Primary and Secondary Schools French Teachers who would like to improve their language skills and enhance their knowledge of French culture.

NEH Summer Institutes and Seminars for Teachers
The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent grant-making agency of the Federal Government. Each year the NEH's Division of Education Programs offers teachers opportunities to study humanities topics in a variety of Summer Seminars and Institutes.
