Gabriela Appel (Ph.D., Delaware), Program Coordinator of CALPER, is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Applied Linguistics and an Affiliate of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at the Pennsylvania State University. She holds a Staatsexamen fuer das Lehramt (magna cum laude) in Foreign Language Education from the University of Kassel (Germany) and a doctoral degree in Linguistics from the University of Delaware. After defending her dissertation, she returned to Germany, where she was employed as a Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in the Department of English and French Studies (University of Kassel). At Kassel, she taught Proseminars on Psycholinguistics, Text Production and Comprehension, and Literacy in an innovative M.A. Program in Applied Text Science and was the Assistant to the General Secretary of the International Society for Applied Psycholinguistics. In 1989, she came back to the U.S. as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Modern Languages at Cornell University. She was involved in Graduate Assistant Teacher Education, taught German language courses, and a graduate course on Psycholinguistics of Second Language Reading. At the Pennsylvania State University since 1999, she has been teaching beginning and intermediate German, several levels of Business German, German Reading for Grads and a graduate course in Second Language Vocabulary. Her areas of specialization are in Second Language Literacy; Vocabulary Learning and Teaching; Language Assessment and Evaluation and Teacher Education. She is Associate Editor (News and Notes for the Profession) of The Modern Language Journal.
