AERA Mid-Career Award to Becky Huang

Congratulations to Dr. Becky Huang on receiving the 2023 Mid-Career Award in Second Language Research from American Educational Research Association (AERA)! Becky is the Project Coordinator for 2022-2026 CALPER project "Professional Development for Chinese Immersion Teachers".

Dr. Becky Huang is a leading scholar in the field of additional language assessment. She has produced a remarkable number of pathbreaking research outputs (articles, books, chapters), with focus on literacy and language development of multilingual learners (particularly English as an additional language learners), while also exploring issues of accuracy (e.g., validity, reliability), and fairness in the assessment systems, standards, and practices of multilingual learners’ language skills. Partially related to her highly successful externally funded grant activities (e.g., IES, NIH), she has also studied the development of multilingual learners’ reading skills in content-focused immersion and dual language programs. Centered around education, psychology, and applied linguistics, Dr. Huang’s research has been highly interdisciplinary with important direct implications for the education of multilingual learners. Last but not least, she has made numerous valuable service contributions to her academic institution (program, department, college, and university levels), local communities (e.g., big brother big sister of South Texas), government agencies (e.g., grant review panels), and professional organizations (e.g., AERA, AAAL) and scholarly publication outlets (e.g., several editorial boards).

The Second Language Research SIG Mid-Career award honors an outstanding scholar who has developed a research agenda for between six and 15 years beyond the conferral of the doctoral degree. This award is designed to recognize an individual with a promising program of research on significant issues reflecting the purpose and goals of the Second Language Research SIG: (1) to advance knowledge related to second language education; (2) to encourage scholarly inquiry related to second language education; and (3) to promote the use of research to improve teaching and learning.

Congratulations, Becky!
